The region north of Mexico was named Nuevo Mexico by a Spanish explorer in the 1560s.

When Spanish explorers arrived from Mexico in the 1500s, they found Indian groups that lived in communities that resembled small cities. They gave them the name Pueblo, which is Spanish for "town".

The Pueblo Indians are often thought of as one people, mostly because of the similar kinds of dwellings and communities they lived in. Actually there were many tribes among them. They spoke a variety of languages, belonging to four distinct language families.
