Butterflies are often used as symbols of freedom and change. Ohio was a great catalyst of change in the mid-nineteenth century. In the 1850s more freedom seeking slaves were transported through Ohio on the Underground Railroad than any other state. It was called 'Underground Railroad' because it moved many people great distances (like a railroad) and in secrecy (as if it were underground).
